"Fredonia Watch Co., Fredonia N.Y." signed 18 size 11 jewel keywind and keyset pocketwatch made by the Hampden Watch Company.  Very unusual piece of early Fredonia Watch Co. history, this is the only example of this watch I've seen and to my knowledge it is unlisted in any book or article.  All other Fredonia Watch Co. signed movements I've seen have been the familiar model that was produced by the Howard Bros. at their factory in Fredonia, NY between 1883 and 1885, so I believe this private label contracted from Hampden represents an undocumented earlier use of the Fredonia Watch Co. name by the Howard Bros. prior to production starting at their own factory.  Watch is fronted by a sunk-seconds enamel unsigned dial and is housed in a 3 ounce Dueber coin silver case with offset hinges.  Movement serial number is 62184.

Running and gained about 4 minutes over 24 hours and I think likely hasn't seen a cleaning and oiling in some time.  Nice looking movement with some typical mild surface marks.  Dial is excellent with just a very light hairline below the seconds-bit at 30 minutes and some very small edge nicks.  Case is not the original to the watch but is attractive and suits it well, and case has a good overall in hand look and feel but has some shallow dents to the rear.
