Elgin Watch Co. 18 size 23 jewel open face lever-set Veritas.  A very interesting early example of this top quality railroad grade, this watch is from Elgin's first production run of Veritas grade and is the 41st Veritas made by serial number.  The watch features a terrific dial personalization as the surface of the dial has been overpainted with a detailed image of a telegraph above the letters "O-R-T" as well as with the owner's name "P.E. Howard" above the seconds-bit.  The O-R-T lettering is the abbreviation for the Order of Railway Conductors, and some online searching has revealed that P.E. Howard was a railroad telegrapher stationed in Lostant, Illinois which was along the Illinois Central Railway.  Watch is housed in a 20 year gold-filled B&B Royal case which appears to be its original.  Movement serial number is 8400041.

Running and a beautiful movement with superb bright color and luster.  Dial is beautiful with only a few mild fine scratches and the overpainting is superb with vibrant color and only some negligible loss to the upper part of the "E" initial in the owner's name (it's important to note that any attempt to clean or soak this dial would be a mistake as it would likely destroy this overpainting).  Case is decent but showing its years of use with the engraving detail on its rear largely lost, with thin slivers of wear to brass to the raised ridges of front and rear perimeter, some wear to brass in areas on the pendant, and with a group of sharp dings to the edge of the band between the 8 O'clock and 9 O'clock area.  Good glass crystal.
